SNAC Holds Inaugural Emerging Leaders Program 2.0 at Georgetown University

Snack Industry Rising Stars Boost Professional Development with Interactive Leadership Program

Washington, DC. June 27-29, 2018 - 41 of the snack industry’s emerging leaders participated in the first-ever Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) 2.0, a program built upon the popular Emerging Leaders Program 1.0 held annually since 2015. The 2.5-day program brought 26 snack producer attendees and 15 snack industry suppliers to Washington, DC.

Led by Georgetown’s top business professors, ELP 2.0 featured interactive team exercises and expert-led discussions designed to help SNAC members learn key leadership skills to immediately boost their professional development to the next level. The course also fostered networking between industry peers, suppliers and snack producers.

As noted by one attendee, “The Emerging Leaders Program 2.0 was a highly effective course that not only educates attendees, but brings together a great group of individuals that can relate to one another and network."

The course kicked off with an interactive discussion on using teamwork to collaborate and innovate, led by Dr. Robert Bies, Professor of Management and First Academic Director of the Executive Master’s in Leadership Program at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. The session helped attendees identify innovation “blockers” in the workplace and discussed strategies to overcome them.  Some strategies included brainstorming sessions and working alongside peers from other departments for idea generation. To conclude the session, attendees were divided into groups and encouraged to collaborate and innovate to create a marketable product or service with only the contents of a box provided by the Professor.

Day 2 of ELP 2.0 included discussions on the importance of managerial ethics, a session on personal branding, and an interactive session on building and maintaining trust to manage working relationships. The personal branding discussion, led by Shannon Rinella, Director of Learning Development for Marriott International, helped attendees develop an action plan for creating a personal brand that defines “who you are, what you offer, and what you value.” Following the branding exercises, Dr. Bies discussed the importance of leaders building organizational, personal and strategic trust.

“The ethics, branding, and trust sessions left me very inspired. The group exercises helped us to apply learning and network,” another attendee emphasized. “Breaking away from the day-to-day for a few days to reinvest in my professional development was highly beneficial.”

During the final session of ELP 2.0, attendees learned about the importance of storytelling to inspire teams to greatness, and were each tasked with developing a 60-second motivational speech to passionately deliver to the group.
