Help Promote & Protect The Snack Food Industry!

This is your best chance to express concerns to your Representatives on Capitol Hill and hear from Washington Insiders on issues affecting the snack food industry.

Preserving Choice for SNAP (Food Stamp) Participants

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, puts food on the table for some 46.2 million people. Currently there are efforts to ban certain foods, including certain snack foods, from the SNAP program. While SFA supports efforts to educate consumers about nutrition, SFA opposes any revision to SNAP that would limit choice by restricting certain foods including snack foods from SNAP. Limiting food choice in the SNAP program would reintroduce complexities that would be at cross-purposes with the basic intent of the SNAP, which is to reduce hunger, improve diets, and support families in difficult times.

Independent Contractor Status

Many snack food companies rely on independent operators as part of their distribution operations and there have been numerous efforts at the state and federal levels to reclassify independent operators as employees. The Obama Administration is developing proposed rules that could place new and onerous paperwork requirements on companies using independent contractors and the Department of Labor and the IRS have announced plans to join forces with state governments to more vigorously enforce alleged misclassification of workers. SFA opposes actions that would place unnecessary or unreasonable burdens on SFA member-companies and is working to preserve the ability to use independent contractors in appropriate circumstances.

Fair Labor Policy

Industry is a cornerstone of the American economy, providing jobs and economic activity across the country. It would seem the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) wants to hinder industry's success. The NLRB has taken steps to implement card check through the regulatory process; issued a requirement that employers post detailed notices outlining organizational rights and contact information for the NLRB; issued unfair "mbush election" rules that would shorten election time frames and limit employees' opportunity to make an informed choice; and even threatened the basic right of management to determine where to locate businesses. The SFA will continue to support efforts to help limit the influence of the NLRB.
